Canada has begun work on the construction of the world’s largest carbon dioxide absorption plant in Quebec. A company called Equatic aims to absorb 100,000 tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere per year with this plant. However, this plant does not only absorb carbon, it also produces hydrogen and meets energy needs.
Equatic’s technology uses the oceans’ natural capabilities. They are huge carbon sinks that can absorb 25 percent of human-made carbon. An electric current passed through seawater splits the water into hydrogen and oxygen, creating an acid and a base. The carbon is stored in solid form in the water. In addition, the alkaline mud created in this process is used to absorb more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
This technology provides both an important environmental contribution and an economic gain. Moreover, the hydrogen produced can be sold and used to meet the energy needs of the facility. This facility stands out as a promising step for a more livable world in the future.
